FALMOUTH — Kate Connolly has a fair share of goals she’d like to reach in her senior year at Natick High, but none is bigger than her desire to stay healthy and get progressively stronger with every workout.
If she does that, everything else should just fall in place for the talented 17-year-old.
The cross country season is a huge question mark with the coronavirus still in play, but that hasn’t stopped the Herald All-Scholastic from churning out 45-mile weeks along Surf Drive and the bike paths near her family’s summer home in Falmouth.
Connolly believes she is further along in her training than two years ago when she burst on the scene as a sophomore.
“I do want to show other people and myself that I’m still a strong cross country runner,” she said.
“I haven’t thought all that much about the season because there’s nothing set in stone.
I just have to prepare as if there is going to be a season.” She would like to pick up where she left off as a sophomore after a promising freshman year.
While her older sister Grace was on her way to capturing three consecutive All- State titles, .

Kate was quickly establishing herself as one of the state’s elite harriers

As a sophomore she took second at the Ocean State Invitational and seventh in the prestigious Brown Invitational before placing second to her sister in the Bay State Championship meet.
Those races proved to be a warmup for her two biggest performances of the fall.

Kate raced to a sterling third-place finish in the Div

2 EMass championships on the rolling Wrentham Developmental Center layout and then, racing in slow, snowy conditions a week later at Stanley Park in Westfield, .

Kate came up huge again with the bronze medal behind Grace and Wellesley’s Maggie Donahue
She was a big reason for Natick’s team win in the Div

1 All-State race.
A hip injury that came on late last August relegated Kate to the sidelines and wiped out her cross country season and the chance to race for an All-State title.
She rebounded during the indoor season to break her personal best in the 1,000 meters with a 2:59.59 on the Boston University track before the coronavirus forced the cancellation of the spring campaign.
Kate wants to improve on that time and also lower her personal best of 10:49.68 in the 2 mile during the track season.
Natick cross country coach Ashley Sloan believes that Kate would have continued to run fast times into the spring season if not for the virus.

If there is a cross country Sloan is confident Kate will be ready
“Kate is such a strong young woman and I think she’s going to run well,” said Sloan

“She’s eager for it and she’s ready for it.

Kate hasn’t run a race in a long time and is well-rested

Towards the end of the indoor season she was really coming on.
It was tough to see everything stop because I think she would have had more PRs.” Sloan said Connolly is an easy athlete to coach and her drive is hidden behind a laid-back demeanor.
“Kate is great to coach,” said Sloan.
“She’s very attentive and has a very easygoing personality but she is super competitive when she races.” Connolly has had a number of training runs this summer with her Kate, who is gearing up for a sophomore year at Stanford University.
She savors the time she spends on the roads with her older sister.

“A lot of our runs don’t overlap but when they do it’s so fun to run with her,” said Kate

“It doesn’t get competitive.
We don’t absolutely blast it on a run.” But it is Kate’s ability to shrug off a sub-par race and not dwell on it that makes her all the more mentally tough.
“You have so many races and so many opportunities to do better,” she said.
“You never have to wait long until the next race and it’s awesome.”.
